Moyne is another small village, you can pass through it on the way to Templetouhy. The Roman Catholic Church is on the street and the graveyard kind of a but back from that but visible from the road. Like many graveyards its got a dedication to those who died in the great famine on the wall. You don't see that until you are exiting though!

The Gravestone photos are at:

http://www.from-ireland.net/tipp/graves/moyne/index.htm

and I'll put some of the photos of the church in the album on this site

Our Lady of the Wayside Church is outside Limerick City on the main road to Limerick from Dublin. It's a small church with few gravestones in the grounds.

When I was on my way into Limerick back in October of last year I stopped and photographed the window and station of the cross memorial plaques, plus the memorials in the Church grounds.

Surnames : Aherne, Bradshaw, Carliss, Coffey, Hayes, Mulcahy, Mulvihill, Murnane, O'Dwyer, O'Rourke, Ryan and Kennedy. The photographs are on my From Ireland web site http://www.from-ireland.net and the index page can be found at

This graveyard is currently maintained by the County Council, it is about five miles out from Templehuohy on the Templemore road. It was once a Roman Catholic graveyard, the remains of the old church are in the centre of the site with graves in the body of the church. There are a few yew trees around the church. The gravestones which stand are not all that old, with only a few dating pre 1900. I've tried listing all the surnames as found on the stones below, and as I was creating the list I realised that I have not put some surnames on stone names.

Click on the Templeree link to view the photographs

Templetouhy is on a road that goes from County Kilkenny to Templemore in County Tipperary, then another road joins it coming in from Rathdowney in County Laois. So, if you're on your way to Templemore from either Kilkenny or Laois, the church is to be found on a left hand turn off the main village street. You can't miss it, and the local national school is across the road from the church.

There aren't that many graves in the church grounds, a family tomb/enclosed plot to the Lalor /Power family and a few more, plus the priests of the parish

I came in from the Laois side from Garryduff to Newtown on a small road that goes to Roscrea town eventually, except I went off this road onto a smaller one. This smaller road went up the Timoney hills ('mountain' mentioned above). The 'main' road wasn't that bad, two cars fit easily enough, the secondary road was more of a one and a half car roads, the kind where if you pull into the verge then a car going the other direction can go past you. You can see the Standing stones in the fields as you drive up this road, and the bog in the distance. The secondary road actually takes you to a 'village' on a cross roads called Knock. Knock has a Roman Catholic Chapel and a graveyard, it may have had a shop which didn't seem to be open, a few houses and a school. From there, back onto the 'main' road from the village to Roscrea and then when I came to the junction with the original road I had been on I went back that road. It's a bog road, that means it goes right through Timoney bog and as well as being a hilly road it's full of bumps cos of the bog all around it.

Corbally church is almost down at the end of it. The church used to be a mill according to the sign on the Clock tower and the graveyard is in a field away from the church. Not too many gravestones in this graveyard - they were all photographed and it's possible to read the surname on each of them.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-12-12T08:24:46Z</dcterms:modified>

Tipperary to Australia : Manning (Mangin)

Bob Manning & Gail in Australia have sent me the photo below as well as as some others which I will load separately.

This stone is flat and can't be read in the photo - but Bob has provided some information on John Manning and his wife Elizabeth and about the cemetery itself

JOHN MANNING (MANGIN)

Born 1815. Convicted at Tipperary Assizes in 1834 and stated to be a native of Tipperary. Buried at Sir John Jamison Cemetery at Regentville near Penrith NSW. Australia.

The inscription is:

ERECTED BY ELIZABETH MANNING

IN MEMORY OF HER HUSBAND

JOHN MANNING

BORN DEC 27 1815

MAY HE REST IN PEACE

The stone is broken and lying flat on the ground. The cemetery is now neglected and unfenced and in the middle of a housing estate. We propose to visit this cemetery and take photos of all the headstones that are legible.

The cemetery originated as a burial ground, used by Sir John Jamison’s Irish convicts, located on a hill formerly known as "a little piece of Ireland". Sir John later donated it to the Catholic Church and an additional portion was given by another wealthy settler, Charles Thompson of Clydesdale.

Elizabeth was buried alongside her husband in 1875. The family erected a headstone with the inscription:

ELIZABETH MANNING

DIED OCTOBER 8TH1875

IN THE 59TH YEAR OF HER AGE

Sweet Jesus have mercy on their souls

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-11-07T09:20:58Z</dcterms:modified>

Tipperary : Killcash (Cill Cháis) : Lyons

Jim Lyons who lives down there in beautiful Cork donated these photos.

His GGG Grandfather Henry Lyons who erected this stone died in 1885, aged 91. They were farmers on the slopes of Slievenamon, County Tipperary. Jim's Grandfather lived in Callan, County Kilkenny.

As you can see on this stone, Philip Lyons died at Kalcoorlie, Australia in 1903.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-11-07T09:27:41Z</dcterms:modified>
