Another set of last years Christmas photographs. Galmoy itself is actually in County Kilkenny, but the Roman Catholic Parish of Galmoy takes in places in County Laois and there are lots of Laois people in this graveyard

Smithstown, Co. Kilkenny

There I was, going from A to B over Christmas when I came across Smithstown, there aren't many stones but I got chatting to a local man, it was between rain showers nad he was busy with his silage or something like that!! but he did tell me a few things about the area and the graveyard.

Mr. Heffernan, the man responsible for the restoration of this graveyard died working on it and is buried there.

Kilkenny Co : Ballyhale

I was down home over the Christmas period and I decided to take myself off to Ballyhale in Co. Kilkenny one day to see if I could find any Gaul/Gaule gravestones for Maureen.........en route I stopped in Bennetsbridge, Knocktopher, Jerpoint Abbey, Thomastown and then Stoneyford on my way back to Kilkenny.

There are bound to be plenty of graveyards in each area other than the one I got to, but on this trip I was working only with a regular Irish road map and not my Ordnance Survey Discovery Series maps which would show me the locations of graveyards. Ballyhale was my destination and so I was concentrating on getting there in plenty of time before the light began to fade which would be sometime around 3-4pm depending on the weather.

The only place that I did find a Gaule headstone was in Ballyhale and as this is where John Gaule and Bridget had their children (or some of them) baptised then this is the set of photos I've chosen to work with first.

Ballyhale is 1.4 miles from Knocktopher graveyard which is only a few miles from the place before it - all by todays roads.

In Ballyhale there were just over 100 stones for which the surnames could be read from the photos I took, and for some of these the surname is all that can be made out without too much trouble. There are also 15 headstones that can't be read at all plus a table tomb, a few flat stones and one which is covered by ivy.

Some of the surnames I am going to list as occurring on these stones are not the primary surname such as Murphy - I'm mentioning Murphy because it's one of the earliest dates here, 1815 and it's on the stone named 'Holohan 1 Murphy Carroll Brennan Plot'. There is also a Murphy stone.

All in all I have loaded about 139 photos. Some of them are for the full stone and then there are close ups of those stones which I didn't think I would be able to read from the main photograph.

There's a little stream beside the church and I've included a photo of that below, plus a shot of the village from behind. It's quite pretty

Kilkenny Co. : Clomantagh

These were not taken on my current graveyard search, they were taken a few weeks ago though.

I was at home and supposed to meet a friend for lunch in Urlingford and I got to Urlingford early....so, I set off along a road in search of a graveyard and it wasn't until I hit the main Kilkenny road that I came on Clomantagh graveyard. This is one I've passed many's a time on my way to school or shopping in Kilkenny and I can't count the number of times I'd tell myself I'll stop here some day.....

So, at last, I did.

The church and graveyard are on the left hand side of the road as you travel from Johnstown to Kilkenny city on the Johnstown side of Freshford. There's a castle nearby. There are about 40 stones still standing in the graveyard around the remnants of the church, and unusually enough, there are no gravestones in the church itself. Most of the stones can be read and to tell the truth it would take little to clean up the ones which I couldn't read.

Some of the stones date from the 1760's. It's not too often that you'll find stones dated that early, particularly ones which are in as good condition as these.

Kilkenny Co. : Urlingford Roman Catholic : new : Priests

Kilkenny, I'm not meaning to focus on it, so I'm going to hold off on a few more albums that I have until the next few months.

Yesterday, I arranged to meet a friend in Urlingford for lunch before I headed back to Dublin. I got there early and took a look around. I'd never noticed the Catholic Church on the main street before and I wonder if a little building on the same street might have been a Methodist or Presbyterian Meeting house - it's all blocked up now and falling down almost. It won't last much longer, so maybe I'll take a photo the next time I go back to take photos of the Mill cemetery and all the stones there.

The Catholic church is reasonably modern, there are notes on the stain glass windows as to who donated them and I didn't photograph these or note the names. Other than that, there are two plaques on the wall in a side room of the church and the gravestones outside are for the men who were priests in the parish. I wouldn't be putting these on this site just yet if it was not for one surname that I know one person to be interested in from Kilkenny.

Actually, I was *really* early, and I thought the local graveyard was up a particular road, except it wasn't and I ended up on the road to Kilkenny city.........and I knew there was definitely a graveyard that I've passed many's a time on the road to Kilkenny from home - so I stopped and photographed every stone in that - and then on to Freshford - and then back to Urlingford.

Eventually, I will be adding Clomantagh, Freshford and the Mill cemetery in Urlingford

Kilkenny : Callan : Cody/O'Keeffe/Phelan

Peter Hanley, senr. also donated this photo and again has provided me with details as to the inscriptions on these three stones and the people named on them :

The first one "At the Cody Grave" was taken at the cemetery at the old
medieval church outside of Callan, Kilkenny. There are three tombstones
in the picture with the following inscriptions left to right:

Cody.
Erected by William Cody in memory of his father James Cody who
dep'd this life June 6. 1804, aged 80 years.

Cody.
Erected by Honour Cody and son James in memory of her husband
and his father Redmond Cody. He dep'd this life the 28th Dec
1792 aged 39 years. Re-erected by Margaret Cody USA in memory of her
grandfather Redmond Cody who died Oct 1st 1895 aged 78 years, also
her father James Cody who died Oct 1st 1938 aged 78 years, also
her mother Anastasia Cody nee O'Keefe, also her two sisters Nary and
Alice Cody who died young.

Cody.
Erected by William Cody of Coolaugh in memory of his father
James Cody who dep'd this life May the 14 1789 aged 76 years. Also
his daughter Elenor Phelan alias Cody who died May the 28 1826 aged
35 yrs.

The grave on the right (William Cody) is my g/g/g/g/g/grandfather James Cody (1713-1789).

Peter Hanley, senr donated this photo. The inscription can't be read in the photo as is typical with stones this old but Pete has provided the following details:

The photo was taken in the old section of the Kilbride cemetery just outside Callan, Kilkenny.. The
inscription reads:

"Here lies the body of James Cody and his wife Catherine Cody
alias Shee and their son Pierce Cody who dept this life Oct 8th
1806 aged 42 yrs. Erected by his wife Mary Cody alias Walsh."

James Cody (b 1736) and his wife Catherine Shee Cody (b 1740) are my
g/g/g/g/grandparents. Their son Pierce Cody (1764-1806) in the same
grave is my g/g/g/grandfather.

Kilkenny : Grainne : Phelan surname

Jim Phelan has sent me a number of photographs of stones relating to the Phelan surname from Grainne in County Kilkenny with information on the people named on the stones - probably more than can be added in the comment section for photographs. So I decided to add the comments as a blog entry and then I noticed that I could upload photos with a blog. I thought it would be the same as adding a photo album, but I wasn't asked to name the album! I have to wait until I post the blog before I find out what happened the photos - whether they appear as part of the blog or as part of the album section!

'Phelan Grave' Full shot of Phelan grave at Graine, they were from Goresgrove...full details on the close up photo. Mary Phelan is their grand daughter who is buried in another Phelan grave close by.Kieran Phelan could be buried elsewhere possibly at Fennor? Rumour has it that he was born in 1812 but his wife appears to have been born in 1832. They had a girl, Anastasia who married a Dunphy, Dan, Michael who
became a railcar inspector in NY and died young, Ellen who married James Arthur Cantwell, a girl who married a Cahill, William who married Catherine Cummins, Margaret who never married and Paddy, born
1863.

'Phelan Close up' is this same grave.

Patrick, Kieran, Mary Ann & Margaret Phelan.  Jim Phelan's grandfather's grave at Graine. Patrick died after falling from a   horse and his wife died 'from a broken heart' according to family   legend. He was brought up at Goresgrove and moved to Sragh when he  married. Mary Ann was Shanahan before her marriage. They had 12   children at Sragh. I have a photograph of Patrick taken at a fair   about 1890. The Patrick Phelan at the bottom was married to Betty

'Michael & Johanna Phelan' Probably a cousin as he's a Phelan,   Michael is a family name and Goresgrove is where my great grandfather  Kieran Phelan raised his family.

'Dunne, McDonald, Fitzgerald, Phelan.' Johanna Phelan (Babs) mentioned on this stone at   Graine, she was married to Philip Dunne and lived at Jerpoint Abbey near Thomastown.

John Phelan, Nicholas Phelan etc at Graine. Could be a distant cousin!

Nicholas Phelan at Graine, could be a distant cousin?   (There's a Walsh grave in the background).

'Bergin & Costelloe' Is Richard Bergin's grave at Graine.

'Betty (Elizabeth) Phelan nee Kealy.'

'Ellen Phelan' grave at Graine, don't know if there is any family connection.
